Include in your answer what constituted ethnic working class memories of the 1930s/40s and what constituted the postwar consumer ideal in the 1950s. How did the The Honeymooners episode (“The Blond”) reflect postwar consumerism and working class ethnic identities (and their memories)?

3) Regarding Steven Classen’s article, how did the civil rights campaign to end the racist practices of television in Jackson Mississippi use the concept of consumer rights to challenge these racist practices? What are the limits of understanding race inequality in terms of consumer rights (rather than in terms of civil rights)? How were these differences between consumer rights and African American demands for civil rights evident in the NBC documentary Sit-In?

4) According to Newman/Levine, how does the discourse of legitimation in television perpetuate gender and class hierarchies? In your answer, reference how Bourdieu’s ideas about social positioning and taste are important to Newman/Levine’s analysis. To illustrate your points use an example of your choice (that is not from the reading or from class lecture).

5) Ouellette argues that public broadcasting in the US can be understood as a form of “enlightened democracy.” What does she mean by this and what is her critique of it. Choose a current PBS program (other than what was shown in class). Explain whether or not this example is a form of enlightened democracy. Explain whether you agree or disagree with Ouellette’s critique of enlightened democracy.
